What is the “Ask a relative” feature?

The “Ask a relative” feature allows you to easily ask relatives to help you to fill in specific pieces of missing information in your family tree that you don’t have but that they may have. This information can include names, dates, and even pictures.

This features allows you to easily ask and retrieve missing pieces of information for your family tree that you think or know that another relative may have.

To use the “Ask a relative” feature, follow these steps:

1. Login to your FamilyVault account.
2. Click “My Family Tree”, then select “List View”.
3. In the left column of the “List View” page, you will see types of missing information that we have detected in your family tree. Select one of these missing information categories, such as “Missing Dates/Locations” to view a list of all names in your family tree which have missing dates and locations. You will see an “Ask a Relative” button for each piece of missing information. To ask a relative to contribute the missing information, click the “Ask a Relative” button, then either select a name of someone who is already in your network or else enter the email address of the relative that you wish to ask and then click “Ask” to send the request.

To view a list of all requests that you have sent out, follow these steps:

1. Login to your FamilyVault account.
2. Click the “Alert” icon at the top right corner of the page (the bell shaped icon).
3. Click “Outgoing-Pending” to view and address your outgoing pending alerts.

Once the recipient has addressed your alert, the status will change from “outgoing pending alert” to outgoing responded alert”.
